GIOVANNI BATTISTA CALLEGARI, 1785 PARMA - 1855 PORTRAIT OF MARIE-LOUISE OF AUSTRIA, CA. 1820 Oil on canvas. Relined. 162 x 106 cm. In magnificent gilt frame. The portrait was created in ca. 1820 and shows Marie- Louise, the wife of Napoleon I on a gilt throne beneath a heavy red curtain with a gold border and gold tassel. She is wearing a sky-blue silk ribbon across her chest holding the Sacred Military Constantinian Order of Saint George with the cross and star, gold crown and depiction of Saint George, a chivalric order under her protectorate. The décor shows an enamelled lilyshaped Red Cross of Constantine with gilt surround. Christ‘s monogram with the gilt letters X and P are applied at the centre, each end of the cross holds a letter of the abbreviated motto in Latin I.H.S.V., i.e. “in hoc signo vinces” (In this sign thou shalt conquer). When this portrait was created she was no longer Emress, but Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. Notes: Marie-Louise of Austria (1791 Vienna - 1847 Parma), later (since 1817) also Maria Luigia D‘Asburgo-Lorena, Duchess of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla. She was the daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor Francis II and his second wife Maria Theresa of Naples and Sicily. She was married to the French Emperor Napoleon I in 1810.
