Beigegeben im Original eine Expertise von Ferdinando Arisi, der Nicolas Poussin als Künstler des angebotenen Gemäldes identifiziert, der auch weitere Episoden aus der „Befreiung Jerusalems“ bildnerisch umgesetzt hat, so etwa das Gemälde in der Eremitage in St. Peters burg oder im Barber Institut in Birmingham. Großformatige Darstellung aus Torquato Tassos Hauptwerk „Das befreite Jerusalem“ von 1581 inmitten einer klassischen Ruinenlandschaft mit bühnenhaft hintereinan dergestaffelten architektonischen Versatzstücken mit Pilastervorlagen und Rundbögen. Im Zentrum an einen Pfahl gebunden Olindo und Sophronia inmitten einer Menschenmenge, von links Clorinde geharnischt mit goldenem Tuch umweht auf einem Schimmel heranreitend. Der König von Jerusalem, Aladin, hatte ein Marienbild aus einer christlichen Kirche gestohlen, da es ihm Erfolg im Kampf gegen die Christenheit beschehren sollte. Da dem König das Bild wiederum entwendet wurde, gab Sophronia vor, die Tat begangen zu haben, um alle weiteren Christen vor der Hinrichtung zu bewahren. Ihr Gebliebter Olindo nimmt die Tat auf sich, um Sophronia vor dem Tode zu bewahren, doch der König ordnet darauf hin die Hinrichtung beider an. In letzter Minute reitet die ritterliche Heldin der Sarazenen heran, um die bereits auf dem Scheiterhaufen Zusammengebundenen zu retten. It attributes the painting on offer for sale to the artist Nicolas Poussin, who is known to have painted further episodes from the poem Jerusalem Delivered, such as the painting held at the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg or at the Barber Institute in Birmingham. The large-format depiction is based on the poem Gerusalemme Liberata ‘Jersusalem Delivered’ from 1581, a major work by the Italian poet Torquato Tasso. At the centre, Olindo and Sophronia are tied to a stake among a crowd of people. The scene is set among classical ancient ruins, in a setting of stage-like, staggered pieces of architecture with pilasters and round arches. From the left, the armour-clad figure of Clorinda is approaching riding a mould, a gold cloth billowing around her. Notes: Probably executed for de La Ferté-Senneterre, 1639.
