A.R. FRANCESCO ALBOTTO, 1721/22 VENICE – 1757 IBID. A pair of Venice vedutas VENICE, VIEW OF THE PIER OF THE PALAZZO DUCALE WITH CAMPANILE and GRAND CANAL, VIEW OF THE CHIESA DEGLI SCALZI TOWARDS SANTA CROCE Oil on canvas. 62 x 97.5 cm and 61 x 97 cm. Accompanied by an expert‘s report by Dr Filippo Pedrocco, Venice, dated 18 June 2012. The dimensions, composition and depiction of light clearly suggest that these paintings were created as counterparts. Albotto has also preserved the Church of Santa Croce, which was also demolished in the 19th century to make space for the Giardini Papadopoli. These details are of great importance, as they also help establish when this pair was created: the architecture of the campanile is shown in its pre-1755 condition, thus providing a terminus ante quem. Francesco Albotto (also known as “Albotti“ or “François Albotti”) was a student and assistant of the veduta painter Michele Marieschi (1710-1744), taking over his workshop after his death. This also lead to him being called “the Second Marieschi” and his works were frequently regarded as those of his predecessor. The discovery of a signature inscription with an address enabled the distinction between the two in 1972. The few paintings that have become known by him have therefore only been identified as his creations in recent years. In comparison with his predecessor, his painting style is much smoother and committed to a more exact representation. Works by his hand can be found in private and public collections including the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Museo e Gallerie Nazionali di Capodimonte in Naples and the Gallerie di Palazzo Leoni Montanari in Vicenza, et al.
