PAUL SIGNAC 1863 Paris

PAUL SIGNAC 1863 Paris 1935 ebenda 602 Paul Signac, 1863 Paris 1935 ebenda SAINT BRIAC, DE MA FENÊTRE, 1885 Öl auf Leinwand. 65 x 45 cm. Links unten signiert. (†) Literatur: Abgebildet in Francoise Cachin, Signac. The painting shows a vast landscape depicted from an elevated viewing point. In the foreground, a garden can be seen on the left and a court to the right against a light background separated by wall with an archway. Fields are shown in the middle ground before the slightly hilly landscape runs out towards a curved coastline and seashore can just be made out in the far distance. A planted balustrade takes up the foreground on the right. This balustrade is the position of the artist and by not denying his perspective he gives the painting an almost photorealistic appearance. The painting's title emphasizes the impression of a certain moment that Signac is capturing here. As a master of colouration and co-founder of a so called “scientific Impressionism” together with Georges Seurat (1859-1891) and Camille Pissarro (1830-1903). Signac starts with clear, vibrant green hues in the foreground. The more the painting leads into the background, the more Signac breaks up the colours, putting them next to each other and increasingly lightening the palette dominated by pastel hues until they seem to dissolve into the sky. Together with his close friend Seurat he also founded Pointillism. The death of his friend in 1891 unsettled him deeply and he embarked on a journey through the Bretagne and Normandy. The present painting was created during these travels. The passionate colourist would develop a distinct style with an increasingly free colour palette for his landscape depictions during the course of his career. This trademark can already be seen in the present Breton landscape. (†) Literature: Illustrated in Francoise Cachin, Signac.
